Ford Escape Cannot Escape NHTSA Investigation

The North Carolina Consumers Council, a non-profit consumer group, asked the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to investigate throttle problems in 2005 to 2012 models of Ford’s popular SUV, the Escape.

According to an Associated Press (AP) report, the consumer group requested the investigation of 1.6 million Escapes based on the complaints of two drivers who reported that their vehicles stalled or moved forward. The NHTSA is looking into the issue with the throttles.

If the NHTSA launches a formal investigation, it may even lead to a safety recall of some of the vehicles.

The AP reports that Ford has sent a number of technical advisories to dealers about stalling and surging problems with Escapes. The advisories help the mechanics spot and fix problems. These advisories cannot be deemed as recalls.

The Escape has faced safety recalls four times in the last year, including those for the new redesigned models. Ford asserts that recalls are not quality indicators; instead, they demonstrate that the company responds in a timely way to technical issues with its products.
