Ford Hit with Transmission Defects Lawsuit

Ford Motor Co. is facing a potential class action for allegedly concealing defective transmissions in certain vehicle models, which endangered drivers and resulted in repairs worth thousands of dollars.

Law 360 (subscription required) reports that the continuously variable transmissions (CVT) in Ford Freestyle and Mercury Montego vehicles for model years 2005 to 2007 had manufacturing and design defects that could result in engine failure. The complaint was filed in California state court and alleges that Ford knew of the problems since 2005 and had issued technical service bulletins to dealers but it did not inform customers.

The complaint alleges that the CVT transmissions of the vehicles have been known to fail suddenly, which can potentially result in a crash that could lead to death or serious injury.

The suit alleges that Ford knowingly violated California’s Consumer Legal Remedies Act and the state’s business and professions code and said that a nationwide class of consumers should be certified by the court.
