Approximately $25,000 has been raised for mesothelioma research following the 4th annual Miles for Meso 5K race and walk, a charity event presented the Simmons Law Firm.

“This year’s Miles for Meso was a resounding success,” said Gregg Kirkland, the CEO of Simmons, which is a partner firm of Sokolove Law. “Thanks to the support of everyone who attended, our volunteers and our sponsors, this event continues to help raise awareness about the horrible disease of mesothelioma.”

The Miles for Meso 5K was first run in 2009 in Alton, IL, raising money for mesothelioma research through registration fees, donations, and sponsorships. Including the money raised from this year’s effort, the race has raised nearly $100,000 for the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (MARF), a national charity focused on mesothelioma research and patient support.

The Simmons Firm has been MARF’s top cumulative donor since its inception in 2000.

Despite the decrease in asbestos usage since the 1980s, the mineral is still legal to use under certain circumstances. It is also a known carcinogen and the primary cause of mesothelioma, the deadly lung cancer that is diagnosed in 2,000 to 3,000 Americans every year.

As for the 5K race itself,  Hirut Mandefro won with women’s division with a time of 16:08, setting a new course record.  Julius Bor won the mens' division with a time of 13:59.

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma that can be attributed to asbestos exposure, there may be legal options worth pursuing. Call Sokolove Law today to learn more about possibly pursuing a mesothelioma lawsuit.
