Fracking May Pose Water Pollution Risks

The disposal of contaminated waste water from hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, may pose a major risk of water pollution for areas spanning from New York to West Virginia, according to a new paper by two risk analysts.

The analysts say the finding means that regulators and others should consider additional measures to reduce the possible contamination of drinking water from various naturally occurring radioactive materials such as uranium, radium and radon that come from fracking, according to Science Daily.

Fracking has been the center of controversy over the past couple of years as more and more people have concerns over the environmental effects of the drilling process that involves injecting fluids underground to release the natural gas.

In April, fracking was linked to increased earthquake activity in certain parts of the U.S.
