It’s always good to see a public figure making an attempt to raise mesothelioma awareness, and 15-time PGA Tour winner Fred Couples is doing his part.

Couples, who served as the captain of the U.S. team in The Presidents Cup 2011, has donated his share of the $4.5 million in charitable donations generated from bi-annual golf tournament to the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (MARF).

The Presidents Cup, which pits 24 U.S. and international golfers against each other in a team match play competition, has no prize money. Instead, each player, captain, and captain’s assistant allocates a portion of the proceeds generated from the tournament to a charity of their choosing.

Couples and Ms. Midge Elo made the $25,000 donation to MARF in memory of George Elo, who died of mesothelioma.

The Presidents Cup has raised more than $27 million for charities since it was first played in 1994. MARF specializes in funding peer-reviewed mesothelioma research. It has awarded more than $7.6 million to date.
