GM and Isuzu Recall SUVs Over Fire Hazard

General Motors (GM) and Isuzu issued a recall of more than 258,000 sports utility vehicles for a short-circuit problem in the power window and door lock switches that may ignite a fire.

The Associated Press (AP) reports that there were 28 fires as a result of the problem but no injuries or deaths have been reported. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an investigation into the SUVs after reports of several fires in February.

The Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier, Isuzu Ascender, and Saab 97-X S.U.V from model years 2006 and 2007 are involved in the GM and Isuzu recall. The recalled vehicles were sold or registered in 20 Northeast and Midwest states, Washington, D.C., and Canada.

The NHTSA says the vehicles were recalled because fluid containing salt and other chemicals to clear the roads in winter can enter the driver’s door and cause a short circuit in the power window and door switches, according to the AP.

Ascender was manufactured by GM for Isuzu and Saab was also a part of GM when the affected vehicles were manufactured.
