GNC Moves Away From DMAA

GNC announced it is steering away from dietary supplements containing the controversial ingredient DMAA.

GNC says it has significantly cut promotions of DMAA products, a major about-face by the company, reports Nutra Ingredient–USA. Earlier this year, GNC supported the use of DMAA in some weight-loss and bodybuilding supplements – although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had issued warnings to supplement makers and suppliers regarding the safety of DMAA.

DMAA (dimethylamylamine) has been linked to reports of dangerous side effects including stroke, heart attack, and death. The FDA recently requested safety data on DMAA from 10 drug makers.

GNC is currently facing a class-action lawsuit alleging the company made false claims about an exercise aid supplement, C4 Extreme, sold by the retailer that contains DMAA.
