Google Inc. agreed to pay $22.5 million to settle a consumer fraud lawsuit that claims it tracked the activity of Apple Safari browser users without their consent.

The settlement resolves allegations that Google used computer code known as “cookies” to deceive the Safari browser on iPhones and iPads so the company could monitor users who had blocked that type of tracking previously, according to Reuters. Google will also have to disable the tracking cookies that end up on users’ computers.

Google claimed the tracking of Safari users was inadvertent and that it did not collect personal data such as names or credit card information.
