How Does Cerebral Palsy Happen?

Report this content

Cerebral palsy can be caused by an injury to the brain before, during, or after birth.

There are certain signs parents can look for that indicate if there was any complication during labor or delivery that may have led to the birth injury. Some of these signs include:

  • Was there placental abruption, or separation of placenta from the uterus?
  • Did the child experience bleeding in the brain?
  • Was there fetal stress?
  • Was there umbilical cord compression?

Other things to look for are if your baby cries on its own during delivery, if the skin is blue, if your child needed an oxygen mask or breathing tube, and/or if your child required chest compression.
