How Does Erb's Palsy Happen?

Report this content

Infants are at risk of Erb’s Palsy if they experience shoulder dystocia during birth, which happens when a child’s shoulder becomes stuck behind the mother’s pubic bone during a vaginal delivery.

The risk of a mother giving birth to a child with shoulder dystocia is increased if the mother has a small pelvic structure, diabetes, or if the child is large.

During a difficult vaginal delivery, the network of nerves around the shoulder, called the brachial plexus, may be injured when there is shoulder dystocia and the appropriate delivery techniques are not used. Shoulder dystocia happens when there is excessive traction or pulling applied to the baby’s head or neck.

There are many ways to prevent Erb’s Palsy. If you think your child may have this condition due to the negligence of a medical professional, contact Sokolove Law for a free legal consultation and to find out if a birth injury lawyer may be able to help you. For legal help, call (800) 581-6358.
