Illinois Nursing Home Workers Protest Safety Standards

In an attempt to protest what they see as inadequate safety precautions being undertaken by nursing homes in Illinois, facility employees and local politicians staged a march/candlelight vigil yesterday in front of four local nursing homes.

Illinois State Senator Heather Steans and State Represtative Kelly Cassidy joined hundreds of nursing home workers and activists on November 15 for a Nursing Home Safety March and Candlelight Vigil to urge four nursing homes in the area to not put profits ahead of safe staffing, wages and resident safety.

Marchers planned to pause in front of each of the nursing homes as part of the march/vigil and shared stories of substandard care they had heard of or witnessed, according to SEIU Healthcare Illinois and Indiana.

This is only the latest protest against substandard nursing home care that has recently taken place in the state. In October SEIU organized simultaneous pickets outside of 50 nursing homes across Illinois that were attended by more than 2,000 nursing home workers.
