Ingredion has issued a recall for an ingredient used in dietary supplements that may be tainted with salmonella.

The recall was issued after the company discovered that several lots of an ingredient called galactooligosacharides tested positive for salmonella, according to the Chicago Tribune. The product is sold under the brand name Purimune.

The company recalled 40,000 pounds of the ingredient, an indigestible milk fiber that is marketed as helping the immune system and digestion, writes theTribune.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said it is investigating whether the ingredient, which is made in a subsidiary’s plant in South Korea, ended up in other dietary supplements sold to consumers and if other recalls may be required.

The FDA has not received any reports of illness linked to the recalled product.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weak immune systems. Symptoms include fever, bloody diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, and vomiting.
