In an attempt to raise the awareness, understanding, and acceptance of cerebral palsy and those who suffer from the incurable birth injury, Australia will celebrate National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Week from July 20 through August 5.

National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Week will be led by Cerebral Palsy Australia (CPA), which has been in existence since 1952 and describes itself as  “the national peak body of organisations that work with people with cerebral palsy and people with similar disabilities and their carers.”

The organization will use the awareness week to continue promoting the advancement of rights and welfare for the 33,000+ Aussies who are living with cerebral palsy.

“There is no pre-birth test for CP, and there is no cure. In Australia, around 600 to 700 infants are born with CP each year. It is estimated that a child is born every 18 hours that has or will develop CP - that’s one in every 400 babies,” said Glenn Rappensberg, the president of the CPA and the chief executive of Novita Children’s Services.

During Cerebral Palsy Awareness Week, The ACT and its 13 member organizations will lead a number of acvitivies, programs and initiatives to help people learn more about cerebral palsy. This week comes on the heels of a recent announcement from the organization regarding its initiation of trial sites for a National Disability Insurance Scheme that would help provide support those living with a number of disabilities, cerebral palsy included.

“This Cerebral Palsy Awareness Week, people living with disabilities, their families, carers and disability services providers alike should feel encouraged by the news that we will see a partial launch of the NDIS within 12 months,” Rappensberg said.
