A Pennsylvania couple was awarded $10 million in damages for personal injuries the woman suffered when a dump truck loaded with stone caused a chain-reaction crash that sent her vehicle smashing into a utility pole.

The Citizen’s Voice reports that Holly Ann Kuchwara and Robert J. Kuchwara were awarded $9.1 million in compensation and $1.025 million in punitive damages for injuries sustained following a crash that left Holly Ann Kuchwara with fractured vertebrae, shattered ankle, head trauma and other injuries, according to the complaint.

The Kuchawaras were caught in a multi-vehicle collision that occurred when the dump truck failed to stop in time before a line of cars. Holly Kuchwara and three other people were hospitalized as a result of the accident.

The police charged Valvano Construction Inc. and its driver with 12 violations each because the truck had steering and brake problems and the driver operated the vehicle with an expired medical examination certificate, according to the Citizen’s Voice.
