Kids Probiotic Supplement Recalled due to Salmonella Concern

Sedona Labs recalled two of its probiotic supplements for kids due to a possible Salmonella contamination.

The recall is being issued for certain lots of iFlora Kids Multi-Probiotic and iFlora 4-Kids Powder distributed between March 16, 2011 and May 3, 2012. The company’s supplier of the ingredient Galactooligosaccharide (GOS)—contained in the supplements—may be contaminated with Salmonella, according to a Food and Drug Administration Press Release.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, bloody diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, and vomiting.

In rare instances, infection with Salmonella may result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.
