Licorice Twists Recalled Over Unsafe Lead Level

Some Red Vines Black Licorice Twists are being recalled over reports of high levels of lead in the product.

The American Licorice company issued a voluntary recall for the one pound (16 oz.) bags of candy with a “Best Before Date” of 020413 after the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) found one of the bags contained lead that exceeded the acceptable level for food products.

Ingesting lead can cause lead poisoning, which is particularly hazardous for children and pregnant women. Mild lead poisoning can be identified with symptoms such as irritability, sleeplessness, and behavioral problems. More serious poisoning can lead to hearing problems, headaches, nausea, and neurological impairments.
