After a final examination of state death certificates, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now lists the official tally of deaths from the 2011 cantaloupe listeria outbreak to 33.

The outbreak was traced to unsanitary equipment, processing and conditions at Jensen Farms in southeastern Colorado, according to the Denver Post. The CDC said 10 of the deaths were linked to an outbreak-related strain of listeriosis, but were not linked to the tainted cantaloupes.

Forty of the illnesses and nine of the deaths happened in Colorado, according to the Denver Post. One pregnant woman became ill from the outbreak and suffered a miscarriage. The death toll is reportedly the worst from a U.S. food-borne illness outbreak since at least the early 1900s.
