Many Fracking Disclosures Decline to Name Chemicals

Only a third of the fracking disclosures made by energy companies disclose all of the chemicals being used in their hydraulic fracturing fluid.

EnergyWire reported that one or more chemicals were withheld in 65 percent of fracking disclosures made by companies because they claimed they needed to protect proprietary business information.  For example, all 230 disclosure documents filed by BP America Production Co. included at least one trade secret chemical, according to a review of fracking disclosure data done for EnergyWire.

Critics say that such trade secrets undermine the industry’s assurances that drillers are being open with the communities where they are operating fracking wells. Many people are concerned about the potential toxicity of fracking chemicals.

Fracking – or hydraulic fracturing – involves drilling deep wells and injecting water, sand, and chemicals to release natural gas deposits found in between the earth’s rocky layers.
