A Louisiana jury has awarded $24.2 million in a medical malpractice lawsuit to a woman who claimed her child experienced irreversible brain damage after a medical device malfunctioned during surgery to correct his heart defect seven years ago.

Tyronglia Willis sued the Ochsner Clinic Foundation after her son, who was three-years-old at the time, underwent surgery in March 2005 to correct a congenital heart defect, according to The Times-Picayune. She claims an infusion pump, manufactured by Abbott Laboratories and Hospira Inc., malfunctioned and failed to deliver epinephrine - an adrenalin drug. This triggered a cardiac arrest.

The jury found the company is 65 percent responsible for the injuries, and Ochsner admitted liability in 2007 and paid the $100,000 cap spelled out in state law, according to The Times-Picayune.
