Megabus Probes Lead to Tire Warning

U.S. motor coach companies received an emergency bulletin regarding the tire-weight limits on double-decker buses following probes into a Megabus crash that caused the death of an Illinois woman as well as other recent high-speed bus accidents.

The bulletin warns the companies about weight limits on tires when the double-decker buses are fully loaded, according to the Chicago Tribune. It was issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and cautioned motor coach companies to prevent tire failures by properly loading passengers and cargo and increasing pressure in tires on the back wheels to the maximum marked on the tires when buses are carrying heavy loads.

Authorities said that in two of the incidents under investigation double-decker buses operated by Megabus were heavily loaded and operating on extremely hot days, which may cause stress on tires and potential blowouts.
