Meningitis Outbreak Hearing Will See FDA Chief’s Testimony
Lawmakers leading the congressional investigation into the nationwide meningitis outbreak have asked the head of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to testify at the first hearing on the issue scheduled for next week.
The Associated Press reports that FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg will appear before the House Energy & Commerce Committee on Nov. 14 to testify about the fungal meningitis outbreak linked with a Massachusetts specialty pharmacy, the New England Compounding Center (NECC).
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 419 people have been sickened by the meningitis outbreak, including 30 deaths spread across 19 states. Around 14,000 people who received the tainted steroid shots for back or joint pain remain at risk of the infection.
