Mesothelioma Risk at Nassau Coliseum Prompts Investigation

The Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, an arena in Long Island, NY that houses an NHL franchise and hosts a number of public events every year, is being investigated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) after workers complained of an increased mesothelioma risk due unsafe levels of asbestos exposure.

OSHA investigators launched an investigation into the possible ‘violation of workplace health and safety standards” after workers at the coliseum complained that they have been exposed to asbestos there for years. Nearly one dozen Coliseum workers allegedly provided photos of a white asbestos-like substance that was found in the building’s boiler room. Testing of the white substance confirmed potentially dangerous levels of asbestos in the arena, NBC New York reported.

The workers also claimed that two of their former colleagues have developed mesothelioma that could have been caused by the inhalation of dangerous asbestos fibers that they were exposed to in the coliseum.

In addition to hosting family events such as Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus, Nassau Coliseum is also home to the NHL’s New York Islanders. As a result, any loose asbestos in the building could be inhaled by thousands of people who visit the arena on an almost daily basis.
