Missed Breast Cancer Diagnosis Leads Malpractice Suits

Diagnostic errors top the list of the most common reasons for medical malpractice lawsuits against radiologists in the United States, according to a recent study.

Research published in Radiology found that of all the diagnostic errors, breast cancer is the most frequently missed diagnosis, followed by non-vertebral and spinal fractures, according to HealthDay News.

The study, which looked at the medical malpractice data for 8,401 radiologists nationwide, revealed that 31 percent had a minimum of one malpractice claim made against them over the course of their careers.

Other common causes of medical malpractice lawsuits filed against radiologists are procedural complications and inadequate communication, according to the study.
