Monster Energy Drink Under Scrutiny

The makers of Monster Energy received a subpoena asking for the information on ingredients, marketing, and advertising of the flagship product.

Monster Beverage Corp has stated, in a regulatory filing, that it recently received a subpoena from the office of an unnamed attorney general raising doubts about the ingredients and advertising of its energy drinks.

These revelations come amid growing concerns over the high levels of caffeine in energy drinks. The Associated Press reports that there are some serious health complications associated with energy drinks, which do not need to abide by caffeine level suggestions by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that had previously been developed for soft drinks. Because of this, energy drinks can contain three times the amount of caffeine present in soda drinks.

Michael Jacobson, executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, has also suggested that companies manufacturing energydrinks often indulge in deceptive marketing by wrongly claiming that these drinks contain Vitamin B and act as detoxification agents.
