More Supplements Contain Unsafe Drugs

More and more manufacturers of dietary supplements are illegally adding drugs to their products, according to a recent report by the Chicago Tribune.

The report found that these supplements have caused many people who do not realize they are taking drugs that have been added illegally, to become ill. Some of the drugs are reportedly experimental and not approved for use.

The Tribune’s report found that these companies mostly operate off of the radar of the Food and Drug Administration by utilizing illegal supplements that are created at unregulated factories overseas. They use the email addresses and aliases to sell them as dietary supplements over the Internet through middlemen, and ship them in packages marked with innocuous labels like “rice."

Since 2005, the FDA has issued recalls or warnings for nearly 400 dietary supplements that contain hidden drugs, according to the Tribune. Experts say the recalls represent only a small fraction of the tainted supplements that are on the market.
