Mother Supports Petition for More Info on Brachial Plexus Injuries

Following a birth injury that occurred to her son and likely could have been prevented with proper medical care, a North Carolina mother is urging people to sign a petition that would require doctors to provide more literature on shoulder dystocia and brachial plexus palsy.

Until she was ready to go into labor, Jessica Gann had a healthy pregnancy. However, in an interview to North Carolina ABC affiliate WWAY-TV, she detailed that many sudden problems arose during the pregnancy that were caused by medical error. Lying on her back – which is a birthing position that is unsafe and increases the risk of injury, Gann said she pushed for four hours to give birth to her son, Jacob.

Sadly, during the process Jacob became stuck on Gann’s pelvic bone, causing harm to theC5 and C6 vertebrae. As a result, Jacob was born with shoulder dystocia - a brachial plexus injury – that causes limited range of movement in his hands.

In an effort to raise awareness about the warning signs of shoulder dystocia and other brachial plexus injuries, Gann is asking people to sign a petition (which can be found here.)

It reads:

“Greetings,

I just signed the following petition addressed to: OB/GYN Offices, Medical Offices, Health Departments and Hospitals.

----------------

Literature to pregnant women on shoulder dystocia and brachial plexus palsyEducation is the key to helping prevent the birth emergency called shoulder dystocia. If we can spread awareness about shoulder dystocia, we can potentially save a baby from obstetrical brachial plexus palsy.Thank you to everyone who has signed this petition. We recently made the news with our petition. Please share with family and friends to help spread awareness. Thank you all for helping make a change.”

Good luck to Jessica and Change.org on increasing awareness regarding the dangers of brachial plexus injuries.
