Hillerich & Bradsby Co. agreed to pay $14.5 million to settle a product liability lawsuit that claimed the company’s Louisville Slugger bats caused a young boy to suffer brain damage after he was hit by a line drive while pitching in a Little League game.

Steven Domalewski was almost killed while pitching a Little League game in 2006 when he was 12 years old, according to The Record. A ball batted with the aluminum bat struck him in the chest, which caused his heart to stop and deprived his brain of oxygen for 15 to 20 minutes. He now has limited speech, is nearly blind, and is wheelchair bound.

The product liability lawsuit alleged that the model YB504 youth aluminum bat used in the June 2006 game is much lighter and stronger than traditional wood models and aluminum bats made 30 years ago, according to The Record.
