This summer nearly 140 children died in a pool or spa due to drowning, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), which based the estimate on media reports of such incidents.

From Memorial Day to Labor Day season, there were 137 deaths of children due to drowning in a pool or spa. These children were below 15 years of age. The CPSC reports that besides the number of reported deaths, there were 168 children who needed emergency treatment for near-fatal incidents involving spas or pools.

The 2012 swimming season saw at least 54 cases of drowning where the child died shortly after the child was left without adult supervision. It was also found that more than 30 children died while in the presence of other children in the pool.

The CPSC states that these figures need to be given new attention as they show child drowning to be a serious problem where young lives are being tragically lost.  Indoor community pools, hotel pools and spas, outdoor pools, and water parks are all places where such incidents have occurred.

Drowning is the main cause of unintentional death among children younger than 5 years. The CPSC Pool Safety Campaign is aimed at spreading awareness among the public about of risks of allowing children to swim without adult supervision.
