New Rx Sleeping Pill: Sweet Dream or Nightmare?

A new sleeping pill by Purdue Pharmaceuticals claims to be effective for people who often wake in the middle of the night, but some doctors are concerned of the adverse side effects it may cause.

Intermezzo is the only sleeping pill approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for those who tend to wake up in the middle of the night. It contains zolpidem tartrate, which is the same active ingredient in the popular sleeping pill Ambien, but at a lower dose. The user is meant to dissolve the pill under their tongue so it works more quickly, according to ABC News.

Some doctors question the safety and usefulness of the drug because it carries all the same possible side effects as other sleeping aids:

• Sleep walking

• Behavioral disturbances,

• Worsening of suicidal thoughts or depression

The FDA held up the drug’s approval for nearly two years over concerns that it may negatively affect a person’s ability to drive safely in the morning.
