New Study Adjusts Diabetes and Statin Link

New research has shown that statin medications may not be the most effective treatment to prevent heart disease and could actually increase the risk of diabetes, according to a study published in Lancet.

Statins are prescribed to patients who may be at risk of heart disease. Since it’s difficult to pin point exactly who is at risk of heart disease, these drugs are prescribed to almost seven million people in the UK alone.

However, the study found that people who are also at risk of diabetes and begin taking statins are more likely to further increase their diabetes risk when compared to other cholesterol controlling medicines, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The study revealed that in case of high risk of diabetes patients, 134 heart attacks, strokes, or deaths were prevented, but 54 fresh cases of diabetes were detected. Among the low risk group, 86 heart attacks, strokes or deaths were prevented, and no new cases of diabetes were detected.
