NFL Doctors Caution against Ketorolac

The National Football League (NFL) is tightening up the use of the popular pain reliever ketorolac tromethamine (Toradol) in its players.

The new recommendations by NFL team doctors are designed to increase monitoring of the drug when used in players to reduce the risk of potential complications, writes Medline Plus.

Ketorolac, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), is used for pain prevention and relief. According to the NFL doctors, the drug should be used under following conditions:

• Direct supervision of a team physician
• Players diagnosed with an injury
• Lowest effective dose for not more than five days
• Taken orally and not be given through intramuscular and intravenous injections

Additionally, it should not be used for anticipated pain or alongside other NSAIDs, reports Medline Plus.
