Nursing Home Abuse Lawsuit Leads to $6.5M Verdict

A Virginia jury has awarded $6.5 million to an elderly woman who was injured after she fell in a nursing home.

Virginia Crouse was a resident of the Stanleytown Health Care Center where she was receiving physical therapy after a stroke, according to Lawyers USA Online. She claims that although her care plan called for one, no bed alarm was available, which led to her fall that left her with a broken hip, shoulder, and permanent impairment.

The staff members of the care center contend that a bed alarm was used and sounded, but the staff could not help Crouse before she fell.

The nursing home abuse lawsuit also alleges that there was a lack of staff to respond to patients who may be at risk for falling.

Crouse’s punitive award was reduced to the statutory cap of $350,000. She may end up receiving $1.85 million.
