nursing home abuse lawsuit levied against a Joliet, IL facility accuses its workers of failing to protect its residents from repeated abuse.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of 47-year-old William Kahle, a onetime resident of the Hillcrest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. It claims that after Kahle had been at the nursing home for a year, he was burned by another resident who had bipolar disorder and a history of subversive activities such as exposing himself, threatening and assaulting other residents, using drugs, and urinating on residents.

In total, the resident was found to have abused at least 23 other residents.

Despite all of this, the nursing home abuse lawsuit stated that the nursing home never reported the burning incident to the Illinois Department of Public Health. It also alleged that the nursing home employees to should have taken proper precautions to ensure that the abusive resident was not a danger to others. In light of the allegations, the department has started investigating instances of abuse at Hillcrest.

Hillcrest was involved in another nursing home negligence lawsuit that resulted in a settlement for the family of patient who died because ofmedical negligence in 1999, the Herald News reported.
