NYC Student Files $16M Bullying Lawsuit

A middle-school student plans to file a bullying lawsuit against New York City’s Department of Education claiming that staff at his school did not protect him from the bullies whose attack left him blinded in one eye.

Eighth-grader Kardin Ulysse was attacked in the school cafeteria by two students who punched him repeatedly in the face, according to The New York Times. Kardin has since had two eye surgeries and needs an eye transplant.

The boy and his father, Pierre J. Ulysse, filed a notice of claim with the city that seeks damages for Kardin’s injuries and medical expenses, as well as loss of earnings that Mr. Ulysse experienced as a result of the incident, according to the Times.

The claim describes the school employees as “negligent” and “inept” and alleges that they also did little to stop the assault and “failed to obtain proper emergency medical treatment.”
