Ohio Passes Law Against Fracking

Energy companies operating in Ohio are now required to inform healthcare providers of the components of the fluids used in natural gas operations under a new state law.

The law includes safety regulations for well construction and rules on hydraulic fracturing or fracking, according to the United Press International Inc.

Fracking involves drilling deep wells and injecting water to release natural gas deposits in between its layers. Numerous studies have found that groundwater around fracking operations contain unnaturally high levels of certain dangerous chemicals, including methane and various cleaning products.

The law -- set to go in effect August 1 -- requires that “all chemical information, including trade secret formulas” of the fluid used during the process of fracking must be shared with patients and healthcare providers, writes UPI.

The legislation also wants energy companies to have wastewater treatment and recycling technologies to conserve water resources, according to the UPI.

Ohio is not the only state to pass fracking laws. Vermont recently passed legislation to ban the drilling method altogether.
