The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that vehicle recalls rose slightly in 2012 as the automakers initiated 586 recalls that involved over 16.2 million vehicles last year.

United Press International (UPI) reports the safety regulator said that customer complaints prompted most of the recalls—almost 42,000 in 2012, which was 500 complaints more than were received in 2011.

The NHTSA says that nearly 15.5 million vehicles were recalled in 2011 and more than 20 million were recalled in 2010, according to UPI.

Motor vehicles can be recalled due to a defect that impacts vehicle safety or for non-compliance with safety standards. Safety recalls are issued even by manufacturers with excellent safety records and reputations for reliably built vehicles.
