PA Gas Drilling Lawsuit Settled for $1.6M

Chesapeake Energy agreed to pay $1.6 million to settle claims by three Pennsylvanian families who allege the gas drilling company contaminated their water wells.

Jared McMicken claimed that gas drilling near his home ruined his family’s drinking water and forced them to have to relocate, according to the Associated Press (AP).

Chesapeake said that it does not believe lasting damage was done to the properties and that other water wells in the area showed natural contamination before drilling began, according to the AP.

Other lawsuits have been filed over natural gas drilling, also known as fracking or hydraulic fracturing. Earlier this year, one was filed in Dimock, Pa., against Cabot Oil & Gas Corp, that claims the company’s natural gas drilling contaminated the town’s drinking water.
