Paralyzed Patient the Victim of Nursing Home Abuse

A paralyzed patient in an Alabama nursing home was allegedly the subject of a number of abusive actions that has led to an investigation and the arrest of two former caretakers for elderly abuse, while a third abusive caretaker remains at large.

According to WBRC-TV, an FOX affiliate in Birmingham, AL, the alleged abuse occurred at the Chandler Health & Rehab Center in Alabaster, AL. It was uncovered after the concerned family of one patient hired a company to install hidden cameras in their room. Some of the incidents of nursing home abuse that were caught on the tape include two separate attendants who seem to repeatedly pull a cord that is attached to the paralyzed patient, some type of heated discussion or argument that takes place in the room, and perhaps one instance in which a worker is hitting the patient.

Following an investigation, two former workers at the nursing home - William Dixon, Jr. and Ronald Butler, Jr. – each turned themselves in and were charged with intentional abuse of a protected person. There is still an outstanding warrant for Janice Lashun Robinson, the third alleged abuser, on charges of emotional abuse of a protected person.

Joe Meadows, who acts as the director of the nursing home, said the workers were fired and appropriate paperwork was filed to document the events after they came to light.
