Pet Bowls Recalled Over Potential Radioactive Contamination

A voluntary recall has been issued for stainless steel pet food bowls that may be contaminated with radioactive material.

According to AnnArbor.com, the contamination was discovered when Customs and Border Protection agents screened a cargo container bound for Petco and found it to be contaminated with traces of cobalt-60, a radioactive isotope.

The food bowls for pets were manufactured by a foreign company that the report does not name.

Two contaminated bowls were also recently found by Illinois inspectors at a Petco’s distribution channel  that serves Chicago, The Herald News reported. The Illinois Emergency Management Agency, which uncovered the bowls headed towards Chicago, noted that although the radiation level is very low, they still needed to be properly contained to prevent any unnecessary exposure to harmful radiations. The IEMA is working in association with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and store officials to track any more possible contaminations.

The IEMA has called on anyone who suspects a possible contamination to report it to the store from where it was bought in order to decrease the possibility of contaminations in other state.
