Pfizer Settles Prempro Lawsuits for $896M

Pfizer Inc. has agreed to pay $896 million to settle about 6,000 dangerous drug lawsuits over claims that its menopause drugs, such as Prempro, caused women to develop breast cancer.

According to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Pfizer has set aside an extra $330 million to resolve the remaining 4,000 lawsuits over the hormone-replacement drugs. The reserve brings the total settlement amount to more than $1.2 billion for claims that the company’s Wyeth and Pharmacia & Upjohn units failed to properly warn women about the health risks that the drugs posed, according to Bloomberg.

Prempro has been linked to serious adverse side effects such as heart disease, breast cancer, nonfatal heart attacks and blood clots in women.
