With at least 48 Pradaxa lawsuits filed across the country that accuse the Boehringer Ingelheim anticoagulant drug of causing dangerous excessive bleeding, the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) has ordered that some of the cases be consolidated one courtroom.

After hearing arguments regarding a possible consolidation of cases last month, the JPML ruled that 21 Pradaxa lawsuits from across the country be consolidated and held before Judge David R. Herndon in a court located in the Southern District of Illinois, The Legal Examiner (subscription required) reported.

The decision was made factual questions arising out of allegations that plaintiffs suffered severe bleeding or other injuries as a result of taking the drug Pradaxa” as well as complaints that the pharmaceutical company”did not adequately warn prescribing physicians of the risks associated with Pradaxa, including the potential for severe or fatal bleeding, and that there is no reversal agent to counteract the Pradaxa’s anticoagulation effects.”

By centralizing the dangerous drug lawsuits, the JPML is seeking to cut down on chances inconsistent pretrial rulings, duplicative discoveries, while also conserving resources.

Reporting from the Food and Drug Administration has so far attributed 542 deaths, 2,367 hemorrhages, 291 cases of acute renal failure, and 644 strokes to side effects caused by Pradaxa use.
