Pradaxa Problematic with Mechanical Heart Valves
Off-label use of Pradaxa (dabigatran) is under scrutiny for potential problems related to its use in patients with mechanical heart valves.
MedPage Today reports that there have been two case reports of blood clot formation in heart valve replacement patients who were prescribed Pradaxa after being on warfarin, another anti-stroke medication.
One patient was on warfarin for eight years after getting an aortic valve replacement and the other for five years after receiving a prosthetic mitral valve, according to the research published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Both the women started showing problem symptoms within a month of starting Pradaxa. Pradaxa is a blood thinning drug used to reduce the risk of certain strokes.
