Recalls Raise Unsafe Food Concerns

Cantaloupes, onions, and frozen beef patties are coming off the menu at some summer barbeques thanks to a series of food recalls.

Two of the recalls – for cantaloupes and onions tainted with listeria – are expansions of previously issued warnings about unsafe food. The third – for beef patties that may contain gasket bits – is new.

NBC News reports that poor sanitary conditions found by federal health inspectors in a Burch Farms packing shed triggered a recall of 13,888 cases of cantaloupes by Burch Equipment LLC for a potential listeria threat, an expansion of last week’s cantaloupe recall of 580 cases.

Listeria infection is caused by Listeria Monocytogenes bacteria and causes fever, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and headache. The food borne illness is potentially fatal for children, the elderly, and people with weak immune systems.

Diced onions also feared contaminated with listeria spurred a Garden Fresh Foods recall of 13,600 pound of pre-made meat and pasta salads. The products contain diced onions from Gills Onions, which recalled its diced and slivered onion mixes for listeria last month, according to CBS News.

Last week Kenosha Beef International recalled 37,600 pounds of ground beef, sold as frozen beef patties, due to potential broken gasket content, reports UPI. A consumer complaint prompted the frozen beef patties recall.

The ground beef was sold as two-pound cartons of six patties of Sam’s Choice Fireside Gourmet Black Angus Beef Patties Bacon and Aged Cheddar. The recalled lot was produced on June 11 and distributed in Indiana, North Carolina, Ohio, Maine, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Wisconsin.

No injuries or illnesses associated with the three food recalls have been reported to date.
