Refiners Pay $21.6M to Settle Consumer Fraud Lawsuits

Six oil companies — including ConocoPhilips and ExxonMobil Corp. — have agreed to pay a total of $21.6 million to settle consumer fraud lawsuits that claim they purposely overcharged for fuel oil.

Gasoline is sold by volume, so in the summer months when the weather is warm, the storage tanks heat up, causing the fuel volume to expand, which dilutes the amount of energy delivered per gallon, according to Reuters.

The oil companies are accused of failing to adjust prices to account for the change in fuel volume, which is known as “hot fuel” practices.

The refiners previously announced that they settled in a principle lawsuit that included more than 50 individual complaints, according to Reuters.
