Refinery Fire Prompts Litigation Against Chevron

Chevron Corp. may soon find itself in litigation over a fire that occurred at one of its refineries that caused thousands of people in the area to be hospitalized for various ailments.

The incident occurred when Chevron operations and fire department employees responded to a reported leak at one of the refinery’s crude oil units, according to Law360 (subscription required). The unit caught fire sending hundreds to the hospital and injuring five workers.

The company announced that it received nearly 3,750 claims thus far with many residents, who lived near the refinery in Richmond, California, complaining of sore throats, respiratory problems, and other ailments. Attorneys predict that thousands more may pursue legal action.
