The New England Compounding Center – the Massachusetts specialty pharmacy at the center of the nation’s deadly meningitis outbreak – is reportedly under investigation by a federal grand jury.

Citing sources familiar with the matter, The Boston Globe reports that a grand jury investigating the New England Compounding Center (NECC) issued subpoenas to some of those who worked for the pharmacy or for Medical Sales Management, a related company. Grand jury investigations are typically shrouded in secrecy as prosecutors determine whether to press charges.

There was no comment on the grand jury proceedings from either the US attorney’s office or the FBI, according to the Globe.

Several lots of steroids manufactured at an NECC facility and contaminated with a deadly fungus are believed to be the cause of the fungal meningitis outbreak that has infected 541 people and killed 36, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In the wake of the outbreak, NECC surrendered its state license, ceased operations, and let go most of its workers. Dozens of lawsuits have also been filed against the compounding pharmacy by victims or families whose loved ones received the tainted steroid shots for back pain.
