RI Nursing Home May Lose License Due to Negligent Care

A history of negligent and substandard care at a nursing home in Warwick, RI has put it in danger of losing its license, according to state officials.

According to the Rhode Island Department of Health, the Pawtuxet Village Care and Rehabilitation Center has operated under “years of non-compliance” when it came to following standards of care on a state and national level. The nursing home has been on a watch list since 2007, and had been regularly cited for its negligent care and treatment of a number of ailments as well as improperly handing out medicine, WRNI reported.

"There's been a long history of non compliance and a long history of not maintaining and sustaining a level of care that needs to be adhered to for nursing home care," said Steven Costantino, the Secretary of the state’s Office of Health and Human Services.

Pawtuxet Village had previously lost its ability to receive funding through Medicare and Medicaid. Constantino added that the nursing home had many chances to reverse its fortunes and avoid the risk of forfeiting its license, but it did not take proper advantage of them.
