Rise in Spine Bone Fractures Due to Steroid Injections

A new study conducted by the Henry Ford Hospital shows that epidural steroid injections used to alleviate pain may put patients at a greater risk of bone fractures in the spine.

Science Daily reports the study found that a patient’s fracture risk increased by 29 percent after each steroid shot.

More than 750,000 people develop bone fractures in the spine due to osteoporosis, and 40 percent of women over 80 years old experience these fractures. Steroid injections are used to increase function and reduce the pain, but now the steroid use is being linked to diminished bone quality.

The study’s lead author told Science Daily that patients taking steroid injections should be warned about the risks associated with potential fractures and undergo bone testing.
