Sheryl Crow Brain Tumor Highlights Cell Phone Worry

Singer Sheryl Crow thinks that her benign brain tumor was caused by the hours she spent using a cell phone.

However, NBC News reports that while Crow’s claim about the cause of her meningioma is not backed by current research or a doctor’s diagnosis, it shows that there are still questions about whether or not cell phone use is linked to brain tumors.

Cell phones do emit radiofrequency energy that can be absorbed by the tissues but there is no conclusive proof so far that they cause brain cancer, say researchers.

Between 1987 and 2007, when the use of cell phones increased, there was no increase in the incidence of brain cancer in the United States, according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI). However, the NCI does acknowledge that cell phone technology continues to advance – think smart phones – and more research is needed on the potential health impacts of the devices as that occurs.

Experts suggest the use of hands-free devices, such as headsets, to avoid unnecessary exposure to cell phone radio frequency energy.
