Smoked Salmon Recalled for Salmonella Outbreak

A major recall of smoked salmon was issued following reports of hundreds of people falling sick in the Netherlands after consuming fish tainted with salmonella.

The contaminated salmon was traced back to the Dutch company Foppen, which sold the fish to many major Dutch supermarkets as well as to Costco Wholesale Corp. in the U.S., according to the Associated Press (AP). However, the amount of contaminated fish sold in the US is not clear.

The AP reports that 85 cases of the same salmonella strain implicated in the outbreak were reported to the U.S. Centers for Disease and Control Prevention (CDC) from 27 states since July and that health authorities are working to determine if the tainted salmon is to blame.

Salmonella can cause symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and pain in the abdomen. It is especially dangerous in children, the elderly, and people with low immunity.

According to the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, more than 200 people in the Netherlands were sickened due to the bad salmon.
